Why vote Lib Dem in Weybridge May 2007?

10.05.49am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 30th Apr 2007

Candidate for Weybridge North writes

"Better services, better value for money and better accountability. These are the watchwords of Liberal Democrats. We want to achieve a fairer, safer and, above all, greener local communities.

Our prosperity, our security, our quality of life, the very sustainability of the planet depends on our attitude to the environment. Liberal Democrat councillors across the country are achieving results - boosting recycling rates; encouraging energy efficiency in buildings; promoting the introdcution of new cycle routes and footpaths; supporting public transport; and seeking improvements in parks and open spaces.

Councils, working with local communities, need to be at the forefront of cutting carbon emissions and cutting waste if we are to protect the planet. There is enormous potential for implementing such measures locally. Governments have spent decades taking power away from local people. Denying their right to choose their own policy priorities; imposing unfair and painful taxes; and letting faceless bureaucrats make decisions about schools and hospitals they have never visited and will never use. This has got to stop."
