Liberal Democrat Youth and Students (LDYS)

A Unite/Mori student survey of voting intentions in January 2005 put the Lib Dems on 34%, Labour on 28% and the Conservatives on 19%. The Lib Dems have gained growing support among students thanks to their policy on scrapping tuition fees and opposition to the war in Iraq.

LDYS is the youth and student wing of the Liberal Democrats in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. All members of the Liberal Democrats in England, Wales or Northern Ireland who are either under 26 or students are automatically entitled to join LDYS for no extra charge. LDYS members receive the quarterly magazine Free Radical and can attend regular training events and conferences.

LDYS organises Westminster Day, an annual cross-party political event for schools and colleges, usually held each February. Previous speakers have included Charles Kennedy, Tony Blair, Paddy Ashdown, Iain Duncan Smith, William Hague, Ken Livingstone, Peter Mandelson, Sir David Steel and Tim Yeo.
